Abstract
This article examines racial and ethnic bias in National Football League (NFL) draft profiles by analyzing nearly 4,000 player narratives from 2014 to 2023 using natural language processing techniques. It finds that Black NFL prospects receive higher overall draft grades than White prospects but are described with fewer positive emotion terms and less formal, less analytic language. Contrary to prior research, writers focused more on cognitive aspects of Black players, often highlighting deficiencies, while references to the NFL itself appeared more frequently in profiles of White players, suggesting disparities in perceived belonging. These linguistic patterns reveal subtle but systemic inequities in how expert evaluators communicate about players of different racial/ethnic backgrounds, with implications for understanding bias and promoting equity in sport.
