Abstract

This article focuses on research conducted by Miguel Hernandez University of Elche, Spain, examining the relationship between digital gambling-like activities—such as video game betting and financial commodity trading—and traditional gambling with gambling severity and related harm among young adults. The study analyzed data from 1,889 Spanish participants aged 18-34, finding that video game betting and commodity trading showed associations with gambling severity comparable to slot machines, casinos, and sports betting, while eSports betting and commodity trading were linked to higher harm levels. The research highlights the need to include these emerging digital spending forms in efforts to detect and prevent gambling-related harm in young adults. Financial support was provided by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030. [Extracted from the article]
