Abstract

This article examines how collegiate outdoor recreation programs in Texas address feminine hygiene and menstruation, highlighting current practices and barriers in pretrip communications. A survey of 36 programs found that 38% do not discuss these topics before trips, while those that do primarily focus on hygiene, product disposal, and rely heavily on female leaders to lead conversations. Respondents expressed a desire to normalize menstruation discussions and indicated a need for more knowledge, resources, and standardized curricula to better support female participants. The study suggests that current practices may be insufficient to meet the needs of menstruating individuals and calls for further research to evaluate educational effectiveness and participant preferences.
