Abstract

The run up to Christmas brought one of the most extensive and severe cold spells on record to a wide swathe of North America. December UK cold spell 2022 was provisionally the warmest year on record in the UK, with every month except December recording above average temperatures. This, combined with above average sea-surface temperatures and some favourable topographical effects, lead to several European countries from Spain to Belarus breaking December and January temperature records on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day respectively.
