Abstract

This study focuses on athletic trainers' (ATs) perspectives regarding high school athletes overreporting concussion symptoms and their openness to including neuropsychologists or licensed mental health professionals on sports medicine teams. Surveying 64 ATs from U.S. secondary schools, the study found that 75% expressed concern about symptom overreporting, while 96.9% supported adding mental health experts to the team. Additionally, 67.2% of ATs believed athletes might use concussion symptoms to avoid playing. The findings underscore the need for reliable concussion screening tools and neuropsychological consultation in managing sports-related concussions (SRCs) among high school athletes.
