Abstract
The article discusses two examples of statisticians making significant contributions in different fields. The first example focuses on Brazilian statistician Dani Gamerman, who worked with an interdisciplinary team to uncover evidence of early human activity in the Amazonian forest. Through statistical analysis, they estimated that there are at least 10,000 earthworks hidden in the forest, challenging the belief that the Amazon was an untouched wilderness. The second example highlights a statistician and his father in Missouri who convinced a state lottery to redo its probability calculations, leading to an undergraduate-driven project to improve the accuracy of all state lotteries. The article encourages readers to engage in interdisciplinary projects and share their own experiences of using statistics for the benefit of the general public. [Extracted from the article]
