Abstract
The article focuses on the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to withdraw the accreditation of Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych at the Milano Cortina Winter Games due to his refusal to remove a helmet displaying images of Ukrainian athletes killed since Russia's 2022 invasion. The IOC cited rule 50.2 of the Olympic Charter, which prohibits political, religious, or racial propaganda at Olympic venues, and offered alternative means for Heraskevych to express his grief. Despite widespread support for Ukraine and condemnation of the IOC's decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the IOC maintained its stance to uphold neutrality and safety within the competition environment. The incident highlights tensions between the IOC's efforts to exclude political expression and the ongoing geopolitical realities affecting athletes.
