Abstract

The article reviews Mortal Kombat 1, focusing on its attempt to serve as a soft reboot for the long-running fighting game series. While the game maintains solid core fighting mechanics accessible to newcomers and veterans alike, it struggles to innovate beyond previous entries, particularly Mortal Kombat 11, and lacks the series' characteristic personality and narrative clarity. The story mode revisits familiar multiverse themes but relies heavily on prior knowledge, potentially alienating new players. Additionally, the new Kameo sidekick system and the Invasions mode offer some fresh elements but are described as basic and underwhelming. Overall, Mortal Kombat 1 delivers competent gameplay but falls short in delivering a compelling new direction for the franchise.
