Abstract

This article focuses on integrating LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robots into an undergraduate control systems course to enhance students' learning experiences using Matlab/Simulink as development tools. The approach enables students to experimentally identify the robot's transfer function, compare it with a mathematical model derived from physical laws, and analyze stability differences using Routh-Hurwitz and Root Locus methods. Students design and implement controllers, such as proportional (P) and lead compensators, on the EV3 robots, revealing discrepancies between theoretical and practical system behaviors. Evaluation through student surveys and Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) outcomes indicates improved understanding, interest, and application skills in control systems after the course integration.
