Abstract

This article examines whether head men's basketball coaches at the NCAA Division I level significantly develop player productivity or if team success primarily depends on player talent. Analyzing data from over 80 coaches and 28,581 player observations across 17 seasons using absorbed regression, the study finds that most coaches do not substantially alter player productivity, supporting the view that "the players make the coach." However, a minority of coaches, including Jay Wright (Villanova) and John Calipari (Kentucky), show statistically significant but modest positive effects on player performance. The research emphasizes recruiting as essential to collegiate basketball success, while suggesting coaches should also focus on athlete development alongside recruiting efforts.
