Abstract

The article focuses on the decline of African American participation in Major League Baseball (MLB) and the league’s efforts to revive black player interest through targeted development programs and cultural initiatives. It outlines MLB’s diversity initiatives such as the DREAM Series, Breakthrough Series, and the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program, which aim to identify and support young black athletes from underserved communities by providing access to training, mentorship, and exposure to scouts. The piece also highlights the historical context of segregation in baseball, the legacy of the Negro Leagues, and the ongoing challenges black players face, including financial barriers and underrepresentation at collegiate and professional levels. Additionally, the article describes the HBCU Swingman Classic, an event founded by Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. to showcase talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) while celebrating black baseball culture and history. Despite recent increases in black players among top MLB draft picks, overall representation remains low, underscoring the need for sustained efforts to rebuild the pipeline for black athletes in baseball.
