CONSIDERATIONS AND BENEFITS OF INCORPORATING WRESTLING TECHNIQUES INTO TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYERS.

Abstract
Various wrestling techniques are now a relevant and required skillset for most rugby league players as the game has advanced offensively and defensively, since the wrestle was introduced. During the game of rugby league, a player is generally required to tackle and be tackled a high number of times where the efficiency, timing and control of such tackles is critical in an individual's performance and ability to respond to reoccurring high impacts. Training to prepare for a diverse range of bodily contacts is where wrestling techniques such as grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) overlap and translate well to Rugby League, equipping players with necessary and extra skills to improve their game. For effective training to be achieved in this area, the amount and timing of wrestle sessions must be carefully considered for optimal results. Other considerations examined in this article include detailed performance benefits from wrestle training, potential negative impacts such as injury risk and specific practical applications within the sport. There are many known wrestling drills and exercises that currently exist within rugby league, particularly National Rugby League (NRL) systems, however the purpose of this article was to recommend four key training drills and explain how coaches should implement them. The main four drills include basic pummelling, around the world, sit through drill and bridge and roll techniques. Such drills can be utilised by players of all ages however semi to professional levels would benefit the most as wrestle techniques have become more prevalent and advanced, hence should be delivered by a coach with relevant experience, knowledge, and belt level. Three sessions per week is recommended for semi to professional players during competition season. ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR
