Abstract

The article focuses on characterizing Achilles tendon ruptures in collegiate female gymnasts, highlighting that these injuries predominantly occur during the take-off phase of tumbling skills on the floor exercise, especially during double back somersaults. A retrospective survey of athletic trainers from 42 NCAA women’s gymnastics programs reported 71 ruptures between 2013 and 2018, with 46% of athletes experiencing pain prior to injury. While 61% of injured gymnasts returned to competition, only 59% regained their pre-injury level of function, and 33% did not return to sport. The study emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts among athletes, coaches, judges, and medical professionals to identify at-risk individuals and develop targeted injury prevention strategies.
