Abstract
IN THEIR BOOK THE WEARING OF THE GREEN, AUTHORS MIKE CRONIN AND DARYL ADAIR CHARACTERIZE PARADES AS "ATTENTION-SEEKING COLLECTIVE BEHAVIOR CARRIED OUT IN COMMUNAL SPACE" AND CALL ST. PATRICK'S DAY "A THEATRE FOR EXPRESSION OF COMMUNITY AND NEGOTIATION OF DIFFERENCE." IN DIFFERENT YEARS THROUGHOUT THE PAST CENTURY AND A HALF, THE ST. LOUIS IRISH AMERICAN COMMUNITY HAS HELD ONE, TWO, MULTIPLE, OR NO ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADES AT ALL. FOR AS LONG AS ST. LOUISANS OF IRISH DESCENT HAVE BANDED TOGETHER TO PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS IN AN EXPRESSION OF IRISH IDENTITY, THERE HAVE INDEED BEEN DIFFERENCES TO NEGOTIATE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
