Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Ball State University explored the perspectives of Nigerian basketball coaches on grassroots sport-for-development programming as a tool to enhance mental health and well-being. The study found that implementing mental health education and resilience development, along with positive mentorship and mindfulness exercises, into sport-for-development programs can increase knowledge and reduce mental health stigma. The coaches strongly endorsed the use of such programs to promote positive development and combat the disparity in mental health literacy and policy in Nigeria. The study concludes that grassroots sport programming can be an effective tool for the development of both coaches and youth, and advocates for the Resilience and Youth Development Module as a framework for facilitating resilience and life skills.
