Abstract

This article examines how the Battle Royale (BR) video game format creates unique, branded experiential play environments that integrate storytelling, player agency, and social interaction. Focusing on Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone, the analysis highlights how these games develop immersive worlds and narratives that foster player engagement and social capital through gameplay mechanics, in-game events, and branded collaborations. The BR format supports an emergent experiential gaming economy by blending digital play with popular culture, influencer streaming, and branded content, positioning these games as cultural forums and proto-metaverses. The article also discusses the evolution of monetization strategies like the battle pass and the role of live events in enhancing player experience, while noting the need for further research on social toxicity and advertising ethics within these platforms.
