Abstract
FRONTLINEAugust 1971British soldiers patrol Bogside, Londonderry, while a lorry blazes in the street. The area was a flashpoint during the Troubles, including the Battle of Bogside (August 1969), which sparked violence in Northern Ireland and led many Catholic areas in Derry to become no-go zones for the British Army and police. Bogside later became the location of Bloody Sunday in January 1972, during which the British Parachute Regiment killed 14 protestors. The British Army retook the Bogside no-go area in the early hours of 31 July 1972 during Operation Carcan, part of Operation Motorman.PHOTO (BLACK & WHITE) [Extracted from the article]
