Abstract

This article focuses on the development and application of advanced mathematical programming models to calculate enhanced "magic numbers" for playoff elimination and clinching scenarios in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) League. These models, adapted from U.S. Major League Baseball frameworks, incorporate unique KBO features such as games ending in draws and specific tie-breaking rules, enabling more precise postseason qualification assessments than traditional methods. The resulting magic numbers are updated daily and disseminated via the Riot website, which has gained recognition among Korean sports media and fans for providing rigorous, optimization-based standings information. The article details the mixed-integer nonlinear programming formulations, computational strategies, and practical examples illustrating how these models improve the accuracy of playoff projections in the KBO context.
