Abstract

This study analyzes 4,196 technical fouls (TFs) committed by NBA coaches from 2000 to 2021 to investigate their association with momentum shifts and game outcomes across quarters, considering game location (home vs. away) and scoring position (leading vs. trailing). Findings indicate that TFs called when a team is leading significantly increase the probability of winning (70% vs. 22%) and are more effective in home games, where momentum shifts and win chances improve notably, especially in later quarters. Conversely, TFs called while trailing reduce winning chances over the course of the game, with a sharper decline in the fourth quarter. The study highlights the strategic use of TFs by coaches as psychological and motivational tools that interact with environmental factors like crowd support, emphasizing their nuanced impact on game dynamics and momentum shifts.
