Abstract

This article examines the potential of culture as a foundation for promoting sports practice among immigrants in four Mediterranean European regions. Through qualitative focus groups with immigrants and sports promoters, the study identifies sport as both a vehicle for cultural expression and a means to foster synergies between culture and health, social inclusion, and well-being. It highlights how multiple axes of cultural belonging—global, local, gender, generational, and non-ethno-national—shape immigrants' engagement with sport, emphasizing the need for culturally adapted, interdisciplinary, and participatory approaches in designing sports activities. The findings suggest that involving immigrants in co-creating sports programs can enhance adherence, promote intercultural relations, and support language acquisition, thereby contributing to broader community health promotion.
