Abstract

The main focus of the article is Thomas Aiello's book, "White Ice: Race and the Making of Atlanta Hockey," which examines Atlanta's efforts to establish major league hockey through the Flames and Thrashers. The book highlights the historical context of these attempts, linking them to the city's desire to assert its cultural and economic significance in the South, particularly in the face of suburban flight by White residents. Despite these efforts, both teams faced challenges, including financial instability and a lack of local support, ultimately leading to their relocations to Canada. Aiello argues that the struggle to promote hockey in a predominantly Black city, where the sport was perceived as foreign, contributed to the teams' failures in Atlanta. [Extracted from the article]
