Abstract

This article examines the legacy and impact of *Duke Nukem 3D*, a first-person shooter released in January 1996 by developer 3D Realms and publisher FormGen. While the game advanced technology, level design, and interactivity beyond earlier shooters like *Doom*, it was quickly overshadowed by *Quake* and did not spawn a successful franchise lineage. Notable for its highly interactive and destructible environments, *Duke Nukem 3D* reflects 1980s U.S. pop culture through its protagonist and settings but has been criticized for its pervasive and problematic objectification of women. Despite its uneven gameplay and dated elements, the game remains a unique and influential example of 1990s FPS design, particularly for its use of the Build Engine, which powered a small number of other notable titles.
