Abstract
The NFL has achieved a new record for the number of head coaches from diverse backgrounds, with nine teams set to have head coaches of color in the upcoming season. This surpasses the previous record of eight, which had been in place since 2011. The NFL has been working to increase diversity among head coaches through its Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least two candidates of color for head coaching vacancies. The Atlanta Falcons' hiring of Raheem Morris and the New England Patriots' appointment of Jerod Mayo mark the first time in both franchises' history that they have had a Black head coach. The Carolina Panthers' Dave Canales is the only head coach of Hispanic descent in the NFL and the fifth in league history. The Las Vegas Raiders have been successful in hiring candidates from underrepresented backgrounds, with Antonio Pierce becoming the fifth diverse head coach at the franchise. Other incumbent head coaches from diverse backgrounds include Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, DeMeco Ryans of the Houston Texans, Robert Saleh of the New York Jets, Mike McDaniel of the Miami Dolphins, and Todd Bowles of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The remaining head coaching openings are with the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks. [Extracted from the article]
