Abstract

Willie Mays, known as the "Say Hey Kid," passed away peacefully at the age of 93. Mays was a legendary baseball player who inspired millions of children with his iconic catch during the 1954 World Series. He was a trailblazer as one of America's first Black crossover stars, breaking barriers during the segregation era. Mays' talent and presence transcended prejudices, and his impact on American culture was recognized when he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. His passing was met with a standing ovation and chants of his name at a tribute in Birmingham, Alabama, where he once played for the Birmingham Black Barons. [Extracted from the article]
