Abstract

The article focuses on the history and current manifestations of political protests at the Olympic Games, highlighting how athletes and fans have used the global sporting event to express dissent despite the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Rule 50, which prohibits political demonstrations. It details recent tensions at the 2024 Paris Olympics related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, including Palestinian boxer Waseem Abu Sal’s symbolic attire and Algerian judoka Messaoud Redouane Dris’s suspected intentional forfeiture to avoid competing against an Israeli opponent. The article also reviews notable Olympic protests over the past century, such as Peter O’Connor’s 1906 Irish flag protest, the 1968 Black Power salute by Tommie Smith and John Carlos, and boycotts by African nations in 1976 against apartheid South Africa’s sporting ties. These examples illustrate the Olympics as a recurring platform for political expression amid international conflicts and social movements.
