Abstract

This article focuses on research from the University of Manitoba examining why some hockey parents engage in verbal aggression toward youth hockey officials. The study found that such aggression is linked to an obsessive passion for being a hockey parent, characterized by high satisfaction from the parenting role but low overall psychological need satisfaction. Using surveys of 992 Canadian hockey parents, the research demonstrated that this motivational imbalance contributes to increased verbal aggression toward referees. The findings emphasize the importance of maintaining motivational balance among sports parents to reduce aggressive behaviors.
