Abstract
This article examines the human impact of rock climbing on the natural environment in the United States, focusing on debates over bolting—the practice of placing fixed anchors in rock faces—and the unauthorized climbing on Native American lands. It explores the cultural and environmental consequences of increased climbing accessibility due to bolting, highlighting conflicts between traditional climbers, who emphasize skill and preservation, and sport climbers, who prioritize safety and broader access. Case studies from locations such as Hueco Tanks State Park in Texas and Gatineau Park in Quebec illustrate the challenges and successes of land management, stakeholder communication, and cultural preservation. The article underscores the importance of coherent policy, ethical dialogue, and education to balance climbing access with environmental and cultural respect.
