Abstract

The article focuses on the absence of Russia from the figure-skating events at the 2026 Winter Olympics due to the country's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned Russia and Belarus from competing as nations, though individual athletes from these countries may participate as AIN (individual neutral athletes) if they meet specific criteria and do not display national symbols. Two Russian skaters qualified as neutrals but cannot compete in the team event, which requires full national representation across all disciplines. Russia's exclusion notably impacts the team, pairs, and ice-dance events, traditionally areas of Russian strength, creating opportunities for countries like the U.S., Canada, and Japan.
