Abstract
This article examines the utilization status, effects, obstacles, and expansion measures of barcodes and radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies in Korean hospitals to improve patient safety. A survey of 570 hospitals revealed that tertiary hospitals had the highest adoption rates of both barcodes and RFID, primarily for visits and security management, while nursing hospitals showed the lowest utilization. Despite recognizing benefits such as preventing patient safety incidents, hospitals reported high costs of facility investment and maintenance as the main barriers to broader implementation. The study highlights the need for financial support and standardized policies to expand barcode and RFID use, especially in medication dispensing and administration safety, where current utilization remains low.
