Abstract
This article examines the use of high-tech assistive technology (AT) by secondary students with visual impairments (VI) in core-content classrooms (math, English, social studies, science) through direct classroom observations of ten students. Findings reveal wide individual variability in AT use, with higher usage during independent instructional groupings and tasks involving writing and reading. Despite frequent device proximity, students received limited technology support, primarily from adults rather than peers, and AT use was lower during social interactions with classmates. The study highlights the need for individualized AT assessment, expanded technology supports, and strategies to integrate AT use with social engagement to enhance educational access and participation for students with VI.
