Abstract
This article examines Kuwait's overlooked historical contributions to film and cinema in the Middle East, emphasizing the nation's early adoption of film technologies and the lasting impact of British colonialism and oil wealth on its cinematic development. It highlights how private film soirées among the elite in the pre-oil era transitioned into a regulated public cinema industry shaped by government censorship and nation-building efforts, particularly through the Ministry of Information's control over film production and distribution. Despite Kuwait's pioneering role and early film productions, including internationally recognized works like *Bas Ya Bahar* (1972), the country's film industry remains relatively underdeveloped due to strict censorship, bureaucratic barriers, and limited infrastructure. The study draws on archival materials from British and Kuwaiti sources to fill gaps caused by the destruction of Kuwaiti archives during the 1990 Iraqi invasion, offering insights into the transnational, cultural, and political forces that have shaped Kuwaiti cinema and continue to influence media regulation and cultural identity in the Gulf region.
