Abstract
This article focuses on the implementation of digital health technologies to monitor medication effects in residential aged care settings, addressing the challenges and opportunities involved. It highlights two Australian trials—Reducing Medicine-induced Deterioration and Adverse Reactions (ReMInDAR) and A Digitally Enabled Pharmacist Service to detecT medicine harms in residential aged care (ADEPT)—which used digital tools such as activity trackers and sleep sensors to provide pharmacists with objective data for early detection of adverse medication effects. Key challenges identified include data interoperability, user adoption by staff and residents, and cost constraints, while successful integration requires ongoing research, government funding, and staff training. The article underscores the potential of these technologies to enhance medication safety and calls for policy support to sustain their adoption in aged care environments.
