Attraction of Lygus lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae) to a ubiquitous floral volatile in the field.

Abstract

This article focuses on the olfactory and visual cues influencing attraction and monitoring of the tarnished plant bug, *Lygus lineolaris* Palisot de Beauvois, a polyphagous pest in North America. Using electrophysiological assays and field experiments, the study identified five antennally active volatile compounds emitted by flowering alfalfa and strawberry plants, with (S)-(+)-linalool notably increasing female *L. lineolaris* trap captures when combined with red-colored traps. The findings highlight that female attraction to (S)-(+)-linalool is enantioselective and dependent on trap color, emphasizing the importance of multimodal cues in pest monitoring. This research provides insights for improving integrated pest management strategies by optimizing kairomone-based lures and trap design for *L. lineolaris*.
