Abstract
A study conducted by investigators at Martin-Luther-University in Saale, Germany, explored the relationship between basic mathematical skills, fraction understanding, and percentage understanding within an intelligent tutoring system (ITS). The researchers used a large dataset consisting of 2,798 students and approximately 4.1 million mathematical problems to analyze the interdependencies between subtopics. The findings revealed that advanced arithmetic, measurement units, geometry, and fraction understanding significantly predicted percentage understanding. The study suggests that revising specific subtopics related to percentage problems may be beneficial for students struggling with percentages. The researchers also demonstrated the usefulness of psychological network analysis as a data-driven approach for improving the design of ITSs. [Extracted from the article]
