Abstract
This study quantitatively assessed the physical activity (PA) levels of ophthalmologists during outpatient clinic work using electronic pedometers. Data from 24 ophthalmologists at a single tertiary medical center showed an average of 360 steps per working hour (SPH), indicating a highly sedentary occupational environment. Residents exhibited significantly higher PA levels than attending physicians, and oculoplastic surgeons were more active than cornea specialists. A negative correlation was found between step counts and the number of patients seen per session, suggesting heavier workloads reduce incidental movement. The findings highlight potential occupational health concerns for ophthalmologists and suggest the need for workplace interventions to increase physical activity.
