Abstract
This article focuses on the role of veterinary nurses (VNs) in supporting pet owners through end-of-life (EoL) care and euthanasia, emphasizing a bond-centred approach that prioritizes compassionate, client-focused communication. It discusses the use of quality-of-life (QoL) assessment tools, such as the Peaceful Pet Goodbye QoL Checker and the HHHHHMM scale (Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, More good days than bad), to guide decision-making and empower owners. The article highlights practical considerations including financial transparency, appointment preparation, and creating a calm environment during euthanasia, as well as post-euthanasia support like follow-up contact and grief resources. Throughout, it underscores the importance of empathy, active listening, and respecting owners' emotional needs to strengthen the client-practice relationship and uphold animal welfare.
