Abstract

The article focuses on the successful revision of protocols by a community blood center to remove geographic risk deferrals for Variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease (vCJD), also known as "Mad Cow Disease," thereby expanding the donor base. Following FDA guidance updates in 2020 and May 2022, the center implemented new processes for donor recruitment and communication, which included manual record reviews and IT script executions to clear deferrals. By May 2022, a significant majority of the 18,913 identified deferrals were deactivated, allowing for increased donor participation, including repeat donations from previously deferred individuals. The collaborative efforts across departments were crucial in addressing challenges and enhancing blood donation opportunities. [Extracted from the article]
