The crit: Making meaning with peers in fine art studio pedagogy.

Abstract

This article examines the role of the group critique, or "crit," in fine art studio pedagogy, focusing on how meaning is created through consensus and dissensus during formative peer feedback sessions. Drawing on Kant's concept of sensus communis (shared aesthetic judgment) and Rancière's notion of dissensus (disruption of dominant perspectives), it argues that crits enable both the establishment of communal understanding and the recognition of divergent viewpoints, fostering artistic development individually and collectively. The paper discusses the historical and pedagogical foundations of crits, their benefits in promoting dialogue and reflection, as well as documented challenges such as cultural bias, emotional vulnerability, and power dynamics. It concludes that while crits are rooted in Western art discourse, their dialogic nature offers potential for expanding shared meanings and supporting diverse artistic identities within learning communities.
