Abstract
The article reviews "Heavyweight: Black Boxers and the Fight for Representation" by Jordana Moore Saggese, which explores the historical representation of Black boxers in the United States from 1880 to 1910. Saggese argues that sports photography, often overlooked in art history, plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions of race and masculinity, particularly through the lens of boxing. The book contextualizes the visual culture surrounding Black boxers within broader themes of racial dynamics, commodification, and the interplay of violence and sexuality, ultimately highlighting the ongoing significance of these representations in contemporary discussions of race and identity.
