Abstract
This article examines the role of political cartoons in Syria as an alternative form of media and expression under an authoritarian regime. It focuses on how cartoons, particularly those by Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat, have used symbolism to circumvent government censorship, critique political and social issues, and inspire peaceful resistance and political activism, especially during the Arab Spring. The study highlights the monopolization of Syrian media by the government and the significance of cartoons as a non-verbal language that communicates dissent and mobilizes public opinion despite repression. It also discusses the social and political impact of these cartoons, noting that while they have faced censorship and led to persecution of cartoonists like Ferzat, they remain influential tools for advocating democracy and freedom of expression in Syria.
