Abstract

The article focuses on Cindy Sherman's recent series of digitally printed textile tapestries exhibited at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum in Denmark, which reinterpret her Instagram selfies through the historic medium of tapestry. Sherman, known for transforming her identity in photography over 45 years, began exploring tapestries in 2019, collaborating with Belgian master weavers to create works that blend social media's filtered self-portraits with traditional textile art. These tapestries depict a range of characters from idealized beauty to grotesque figures, engaging with themes of identity, appearance, and the performative nature of social media. The works also evoke historical and artistic references, highlighting the contrast between ephemeral digital images and the tactile qualities of tapestry.
