Abstract

This article reviews a collective volume that addresses the philosophical significance of sculpture, highlighting its historical neglect compared to image-based arts in contemporary philosophy. The book comprises ten chapters from analytic and continental traditions, exploring key issues such as the ontology of sculpture, its relation to the body, temporality, representation, materials, and cultural context, including discussions of African and Yorùbá sculptural traditions. Contributors challenge dominant Western narratives by emphasizing embodiment, imaginative engagement, and the public and ethical dimensions of sculpture, while also noting the need for broader inclusion of non-Western perspectives. The volume offers a cohesive and multifaceted examination of sculpture’s unique philosophical challenges and suggests directions for future research.
