Abstract

This article examines student and staff perceptions of one-to-one tutorials within an undergraduate fine art course at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA). Through observations and structured interviews, the study found broad agreement that successful tutorials depend on dedicated time, strong tutor-student relationships, and open dialogue, which enable feedback and personalized support. A notable finding is the importance students place on validation from tutors as practising artists, which helps integrate them into the art community and supports identity formation as artists. While online tutorials during the COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges for material engagement, both students and staff valued the individual tutorial as a distinct and essential pedagogic practice alongside group critiques.
