Abstract
Westgarth, who led the recent ahrc-funded project on British antique dealers in the twentieth century, is well placed to move the antique and curiosity dealer into the centre of contemporary discussions of the past or, in his words, from "footnote to fulcrum". Here, Westgarth considers subjects such as the rise in illustrated antiquarian publications by men like Meyrick, whose purchases from businesses such as the Isaacs' informed their work. The next section, "The emergence of historical consciousness", examines the significant role played in the increasing antiquarian interests of the nineteenth century by dealers in antiques and curiosities.
