Abstract

The article focuses on the transformative impact of forests on both ecosystems and urban environments. Sebastião Salgado and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado successfully restored 600 hectares of degraded land in the Atlantic Forest, planting 3 million trees to create a diverse ecosystem. Urban initiatives, such as Yasmeen Lari's Miyawaki forests in Karachi and timber architecture projects in cities like Milan and Barcelona, highlight the role of forests in cooling urban areas and addressing housing crises. However, the article also emphasizes the unsustainable nature of current timber consumption practices and the need for a shift towards cultivating forests rather than clearing them. Additionally, it notes the significant deforestation occurring in British Columbia, where colonial governments have historically leased land to logging companies, resulting in the loss of old-growth forests.
