Abstract
The article focuses on the life and legacy of Sebastião Salgado, a renowned photographer and humanitarian who passed away in Paris on May 23 at the age of 81. Born in Brazil in 1944, Salgado was known for his powerful images that depicted human suffering and environmental decline, often capturing scenes from over 120 countries, including the Ethiopian famine and the Rwandan genocide. After a period of reflection following his documentation of the Rwandan genocide, he co-founded the Instituto Terra to aid in reforestation efforts in Brazil. Salgado's work, while celebrated for its beauty, faced criticism for "aestheticizing tragedy," and he expressed a complex view on humanity's future, remaining optimistic about the planet's resilience.
