Abstract

The article examines the unique relationship between graffiti practices, "gentle privatism," and urban space in Block 45, a large socialist-era housing estate in New Belgrade. It focuses on an informal code of conduct among local graffiti artists that governs the use and hierarchy of public and semi-public surfaces, fostering social respect and community cohesion. This code includes rules such as respecting neighbors by avoiding private property and entrances, not covering older or significant graffiti, and prohibiting sports fan graffiti to maintain peace. The study argues that through these practices, graffiti artists appropriate public spaces as shared canvases that reflect collective identity and resist neoliberal privatization and urban anonymity. Ultimately, the graffiti culture in Block 45 serves as a medium for cultural expression and social commentary, redefining public space and strengthening community bonds within the neighborhood.
