Louisiana State University Researcher Discusses Research in Psychology (Preliminary Validation of Digital Photography to Assess the Home Food Environment).

This article focuses on new research validating a low-burden digital photo method for assessing the home food environment (HFE), defined as the availability and accessibility of foods within the home, which influences healthy eating behaviors. Conducted by researchers at Louisiana State University and funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the study compared traditional home food inventories (HFI) with participant-submitted photographs of household foods. Results showed substantial agreement between methods, high inter-rater reliability, and a participant preference for the photo method, suggesting it as a valid and efficient tool for collecting HFE data. The study sample was predominantly young adult Hispanic or Latino females.
