Abstract

The article focuses on the touring exhibition "Cindy Sherman – Anti-Fashion," which debuted at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and explores the interplay of fashion, art, and identity in the work of contemporary artist Cindy Sherman (b. 1954). Curated by Alessandra Nappo in collaboration with Sherman and her gallery Hauser & Wirth, the exhibition presents around 70 works spanning Sherman's career, highlighting her use of clothing as a stylistic tool distinct from traditional fashion photography. The show includes large-format prints alongside fashion magazine inserts and commissions, revealing Sherman's complex relationship with the fashion world from her early projects to recent series like "Men" (2019/2020). Through thematic sections and an accompanying catalogue, the exhibition examines how Sherman's images challenge conventional notions of beauty, identity, and fashion as both a form of social discipline and a space for alternative self-expression.
