Abstract

This article examines the graffiti that emerged during Chile's 2019 estallido social (social explosion) as complex cultural expressions intertwined with historical and political crisis. Focusing on motifs such as the bleeding eye, the graffiti is analyzed not merely as direct political protest but as containing an aesthetic and political unconscious that reflects deeper social ruptures, including prolonged neoliberal governance and state violence since the Pinochet dictatorship. The essay situates these visual forms within broader struggles over social reproduction, gendered violence, and the contested nature of the Chilean state, highlighting how graffiti both embodies and challenges the ongoing crisis of social and political order. It also considers feminist interventions and the symbolic role of abjection in shaping emergent political subjectivities during the uprising.
